Chilly

Yes, I know. A photo a day should mean ONE photo a day. I am hopeless when it comes to making decisions, we all knew that, so this will be a learning experience for me. I should make up my mind what the message is, pick it, just one, and then select the image. It's the same as in good writing: keep it focused.

Here for instance I admittedly had two things on my mind. One was that it was a chilly day today, temperatures one or two degrees celsius below freezing (28-30 F) combined with a wind that blew your hat off, walking in the harbor... I could barely keep my hands from shaking long enough to quickly snap a couple of photos. The light everywhere was cold too. I wanted to depict the chilly scenery and I liked the second photo in that respect. My other message was that I saw these icebreakers, docked, waiting the sea to freeze over so they would get into work. The icebreakers are sort of related to the idea of coldness, but still a separate message. I do realize that if I was a professional I would have been able to beautifully include both messages into one perfect photo but, well, as things are I'm stuck with two pictures.

I honestly have no premeditated plan on what the topics will be each day. I spotted the icebreakers on my way to a mall further afield today, I had brought my camera because from now on I've decided to carry it wherever I go to get the pictures I want, but I wasn't intentionally heading to shoot at the ships. They just caught my eye.

The names of the ships btw are descriptive too: 'Sisu' meaning stamina or perseverance, 'Urho' (behind Sisu) meaning bravery, and 'Otso' and 'Kontio' (behind Otso) both words that mean a bear. Characteristics we all need in dealing with the freezing cold at these latitudes.

Prologue

For starters I want to introduce my camera, Canon PowerShot A710 IS. The pictures I post starting tomorrow will be taken with it. I'm not a professional photographer, as you will very soon notice, but I enjoy the idea of presenting an image each day. How the collection depicts my life will be interesting to see. Well, interesting for me :-)
